Early in my career, a friend walked with me to the parking lot after a meeting and told me something about a person I had recently hired.
He had seen a pattern that I had overlooked, and he walked me through it, giving me every reason to listen to what he was saying.
He was right about all of it, but I was not ready to hear him.
So I nodded, thanked him, and quietly filed the conversation somewhere I would not have to look at it again. The version of the story where I had read that person correctly, or perhaps felt they’d treat me differently because of a relationship, felt better than the one where I had missed what was obvious to everybody but me.
Eighteen months later, every warning he gave me in that parking lot had come true, close to line for line.
The repair cost more than the hard conversation ever would have. It cost the team morale and about 6 months of momentum, but the piece I felt hardest was the credibility I had to rebuild with people who had watched me defend a decision I should have admitted was wrong.
The hour of hard conversation would have cost me a little pride, but I turned it down and paid full price for the failure instead.
I have watched leaders run this in all settings.
Correction feels expensive while it is happening, so we postpone it, and the postponement trades a small bill today for a massive one later.
Solomon wrote for people who needed to tell the difference between the friend who bruises you and the admirer who feels wonderful to be around.
“Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.”
Proverbs 27:6
The friend handing you a hard truth early is handing you a discount on something you don’t have to pay full price for, but you have to be humble enough to take it.
The Math Leaders Keep Running Backwards
Set the two prices next to each other.
A hard conversation costs you an hour and some discomfort you will have forgotten by the weekend. The failure you accept in its place can cost you a team you spent six years assembling, a marriage you swore you would protect, and a name that took two decades to build and one bad stretch to lose.
Feedback is cheap, but hardly anybody wants to buy it.
Think about the warning light on your dashboard, which interrupts the drive and points at a problem you would rather handle another week. That light was never working against you, and it is the cheapest warning you will ever get about what is happening under the hood.
Ignore it long enough, and you still meet the problem, but you meet it on the shoulder of the highway instead, at ten times the price, on a day you did not choose.
Solomon puts a sharper edge on it for anyone who keeps waving off the warning light.
“Whoever remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed, without remedy.”
Proverbs 29:1 NIV
That is a word for a leader reading this today. A collapse only looks sudden from the outside, and from the inside it was years of ignored warnings arriving at once.
I have sat with executives in the weeks after a blowup, and in nearly every case somebody had told them this was coming years earlier. The information was in the building, but it never got past their defenses.
The Myth That Has Ended More Careers Than Incompetence
There is a story many leaders tell themselves on the way up.
Strong leaders outgrow the need for correction, and the higher you rise, the fewer people should be questioning your calls.
That myth has taken down more capable leaders than almost anything else I have watched in twenty years.
They allow truth to run the other direction.
The higher you rise, the more your blind spots cost, and the fewer people around you feel safe enough to name them.
So the leaders who need honest feedback most are usually receiving the least of it, and their own success insulates them from the exact voices that could save them.
Solomon refuses to soften it.
“Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.”
Proverbs 12:1 NIV
That is blunt on purpose, and it ties your willingness to be corrected to whether you are wise at all.
Wanting the truth about yourself is strength, but guarding yourself against it is the early tell of a leader on the way down, even while the metrics still look strong.
The lesson that took me longest to learn sits alongside Solomon’s line about the wounds of a friend. The people flattering you can become far more dangerous than the people correcting you.
Flattery feels wonderful, but with the wrong motive it charges you slowly, keeping you comfortable while allowing something small to grow into something big. Correction feels awful but saves you quietly. The person willing to risk your reaction is usually the one most invested in where you end up.
Build the Loop Before You Need It
Wisdom here stays theoretical until you install something. Four steps, in order, each depending on the one in front of it.
1. Name your three
Pick three people and give them standing permission to tell you the truth about yourself. Choose the ones who love you enough to risk the friendship and who have earned the right through years of being for you. Anyone who has never once disagreed with you has already disqualified themselves.
Most of us keep plenty of advisers on strategy and almost none on ourselves, and that gap is where the expensive mistakes live.
2. Ask a question they can actually answer
Permission by itself changes nothing, because most people will not volunteer a hard word into silence. Ask something real and then sit still for the answer without explaining yourself.
The question I use is short. Where am I fooling myself right now?
Then say nothing for ten seconds, because the silence does most of the work.
3. Run the audit on yourself
Answer these based on how you actually react rather than how you like to believe you react.
When somebody corrects you, is your first move to understand them or to defend yourself?
Name the last person who told you something hard, and remember how you treated them afterward.
Who is left in your life with both the standing and the safety to tell you that you are wrong?
When did you last change your mind because of something somebody said?
“Whoever heeds life-giving correction will be at home among the wise. Those who disregard discipline despise themselves, but the one who heeds correction gains understanding.”
Proverbs 15:31-32 NIV
The person who can hear correction keeps getting wiser, but the one who cannot builds a wall between himself and reality and then wonders why nothing works.
Whichever question was hardest to answer honestly is the one to sit with, because that is where the wound of a friend would land if you let one near.
4. Pay the debt you already owe
Somebody has already told you a truth that changed your path, and most of us never thanked that person out loud for it. Do it this week. Call them, name the specific thing they said, and tell them what it saved you.
Listening is half of it, but honoring the people who told you the truth is how you make sure they tell you again.
Every Leader Who Lasts Has a Nathan
For a long stretch I surrounded myself with people who agreed with me, and I called that a strong team.
Then one friend I had refused to play along. I was talking myself into a decision everyone else in the room had already nodded at, and he looked at me and said he thought I was wrong, and that I already knew it.
That stung for a couple of days, but he was also completely right.
King David had a man like that.
He had covered up a serious sin and arranged the death of a loyal man to keep it quiet, and the cover-up was holding. Then a prophet walked into the palace, told the king a story about a stolen lamb, waited for David’s outrage, and answered it with four of the bravest words in scripture.
Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man!”
2 Samuel 12:7 NIV
A king surrounded by people paid to agree with him still had one voice willing to wound him, and that wound saved his throne, which is exactly what Solomon meant about the wounds of a friend.
Every leader who lasts has a Nathan.
The ones who crash usually ran everybody like that out of the room years earlier, and by the time the warning mattered, there was nobody left with standing to give it.
So name yours. If no name comes, that silence is the most useful thing in this article, and finding one is this week’s assignment.
Wisdom has less to do with being the smartest person in the room than with staying teachable long after you have earned enough success that nobody could make you listen.
Pay the small bill now, leader. It beats the crash every time.

It’s a powerful picture of biblical brotherhood and discipleship: someone pouring into you, someone walking alongside you, and someone you are pouring into.
