Many leaders are equipped with the right titles, teams, and strategies, and yet find themselves exhausted, stuck, or burdened. The vision God gave you may feel heavier now than when you first embraced it. This sensation is often a result of resistance. But remember, just because something is hard doesn’t mean it’s not holy.

Defining Resistance

Resistance can range from the emotional, spiritual, or relational obstacles to systemic issues that drag momentum. It’s crucial to understand that not all resistance is the same. The mistake lies in treating all of it uniformly. There’s a tool I want to introduce you to, the Overcoming Resistance Framework. This tool categorizes resistance into barriers, hurdles, and gaps, helping you handle each wisely.

Barriers: The Unmovable Obstacles

Barriers are elements you cannot change - laws, staffing caps, or deeply rooted cultural aspects. Leaders unable to identify these end up blaming themselves or others for the unchangeable. Barriers are not excuses for inaction. They are invitations for wisdom and innovative leadership around them.

Hurdles: The Challenges You Can Overcome

Hurdles block progress but aren’t permanent. Many leaders mistake hurdles for barriers due to exhaustion or burnout. Yet often, what’s needed is creativity and persistence, reaching out, and re-engagement rather than isolation. Facing a hurdle should prompt you to question whether the resistance is due to fear or facts, uncover the true story, and explore creative solutions.

Gaps: Filling the Missing Pieces

Gaps are missing components in the vision or plan—whether in clarity, training, or communication. Often, leaders assume these gaps are filled when they aren’t. Addressing gaps involves honest assessment and diligent communication to ensure all aspects are covered, re-establishing momentum without overhauling the vision.

Practical Steps for Leaders

  1. Identify the Resistance: Ask yourself whether you’re facing a barrier you need to accept, a hurdle to overcome, or a gap to fill.

  2. Engage Your Team: Discuss with your team about the resistance, ensuring you are not facing it in isolation. Honest communication can energize your team and lead to effective strategies.

  3. Seek Divine Guidance: Ask God what the resistance is teaching you. Sometimes pressures are there to develop perseverance and trust, not just a new strategy.
